Guide>Time to visit some CCRCs>CONSIDERATIONS

When searching for the best CCRC for you, there are many things to consider. Here are some of the concerns I had during my search for a CCRC for myself.

Considerations

  • Close to family. I wanted the CCRC to be within a 30-minute drive of Winston-Salem, NC.
  • Up-to-date decor. I wanted the CCRC to look modern, not like a Victorian rest home.
  • Campus. I wanted the CCRC to have a beautiful campus with old-growth landscaping, not just barren land with newly planted trees and scrubs.
  • Timeless architecture. Interiors can be updated relatively easily, but exteriors cannot.
  • Interconnected buildings. I wanted all the buildings to be interconnected so you can access everything without going outside.
  • Surrounding area. I wanted the CCRC to be near shopping, medical services, parks, and bicycling trails
  • Entrance fee. Since I'm relatively young and expect to live in a CCRC for more than ten years, I preferred the standard refund entrance fee. The 50, 70, and 90 percent refund plans are only beneficial if you expect to live at a CCRC for less than 10 years or if you want to leave a guaranteed legacy.
  • Monthly fee. I wanted a monthly fee that is cost-effective. One that is reasonably priced for the amenities and services offered.
  • Size. I preferred a medium-sized CCRC that has everything you want but still has a resident population that allows you to get to know most everyone and not just be one of a crowd.
  • Healthcare. I preferred new state-of-the-art medical facilities.
  • Floorplan. I wanted a one-bedroom apartment with a den and a balcony, in a good location, and with a good view.
  • Dining. I preferred a CCRC with multiple dining venues.
  • Construction. I preferred an established CCRC instead of new construction.
  • Fitness facilities/classes/events. I want a CCRC that has a concern for active seniors of all fitness levels.
  • Atmosphere. I preferred a more laid-back atmosphere not a more formal atmosphere.
  • Technology. I wanted a CCRC that is constantly trying to stay up-to-date with technology and service trends.
  • Staff. I wanted a CCRC where the staff loves their jobs and genuinely cares for the residents. I want a CRC where you feel like you are friends with everyone, including staff.
